Many people think that you need many years of web training and experience to build a blog or website; but, what if I say building a website is incredibly easy and anyone with the basic computer and internet knowledge can do it!!! Yes, I’m confidently saying it, because I have set, installed and designed my weblog all by myself, without any help. Believe me – I was a complete layman about all these when I started.
Basically, you don’t need to know CSS, PHP or even HTML to build a successful professional looking website. I know, I know, you have a lots of “how’s”, “what’s”, and “buts” hitting your mind now; hold on, I’ll easily explain everything you need to know about starting a blog – all in detail. Let me tell you, you may remain skeptical while reading, but once you start building your weblog, you’ll realize how easy it is.
So, let’s start with the most important-
About your blog hosting provider (How to get your www.yourdomainname.com?)
The first and foremost thing you need to do before starting your blog is to choose a good web hosting provider to register your blog/website name. You see, there are many web hosting companies including Blogger and WordPress, who provide free services, but they won’t give you the complete ownership and control that you need. Moreover, with these free hosting you’ll see your blog name as www.yourdomainname.serviceprovider.com; I mean, look at the name – your brand name is associated with somebody else!!! I don’t think, this should be okay with you, if you’re looking forward to build your own brand. So, here is what you should do-
*Avoid free hosts and blogging platforms if you wish for a successful blog that makes money.
* Choose a hosting provider with free install WordPress, like Ipage, BlueHost etc.. where you can set up your own WordPress blog on your own host.
Myths about WordPress Setup Process
Have you ever heard that WordPress is complicated and too difficult to understand? I heard it on my research when I was building my weblog; Well, I must say, that’s a myth when your hosting provider has a free WordPress install with it. Installing WordPress through their WordPress Setup Wizard only takes a few clicks and the process itself is self-explanatory which is so easy to understand.
Once you’ve installed WordPress, you can start building your blog or website. At first, navigate to your WordPress Admin page by entering the url – http://www.yourdomainname.com/wp-login.php; You need to enter your username and password that you chose while the installation. A successful login will take you to your admin page as in the picture below, where you can go through the options to build your awesome blog.
Choosing A Theme
On the right hand side of the Admin Page, go to Appearance–>Themes; You’ll find numerous free WordPress Themes to choose from. Activate the one that suits your needs the best. You can also buy themes from third parties and upload it but, if you take my suggestion just stick to one of the free themes till you learn the setup and process. Theme changing process is easy; you can always keep a backup of your settings and change your theme. I bet you’ll change your website theme at a later point of time with a perfection point of view. Believe me or not, I’ve changed 5 themes in these 7 months of my website launch!!
You can choose all important plugins including the Yoast Seo, WP-Optimize, Contact Form 7, WP Total Cache, Jet Pack and anything else that you need to meet your requirements. But, make sure you don’t download anything that is not compatible to your theme or your version of WordPress. The system of WordPress is too sensitive and it will shut down immediately or malfunction if something goes wrong. You need to then call your hosting service provider, where either they’ll remove the plugin or they’ll set everything to default again. So be careful. Most importantly, please backup your database before you decide to do any major changes.
Important Note about Jet Pack Plugin – Once you install Jet Pack, go to Protect–>Configure(the wheel symbol)–>Enter your IP address under the Whitelist Management and click save. Whitelisting your IP address will stop you being ever blocked by Jet Pack.
Okay, now you are set with the installation. Go to Users–>>Your Profile to update your details. You can go to appearance–>>Widgets to design your sidebar and footer with your desired options. Design your Home Page and header options based on the theme you’ve chosen. To start writing posts in your blog, simply click on the Posts –> Add New, where you can create your article and publish.
See, isn’t the process easy?? So, if you dream of having your own blog, but afraid of creating it because you’ve being thinking that its complicated, then you probably should forget all that you’ve heard earlier and start building your creative blog now!!
Finally, I would like say, WordPress is not at all limited to the above options; It is a huge platform, full of ideas and options, which can give wings to your creativity. If you take my suggestion, once you have installed WordPress on your domain, just go through all the available options and the documentation thoroughly before starting to design your blog.
I think this is enough to start your blog; rest you can explore once you start; what do you say??
