THE HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE NATIONAL CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL
Every year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival recalls and shows respect to the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, DC in 1912 . Over the years, gifts have been exchanged between the two countries. In 1915, the United States Government reciprocated with a gift of flowering dogwood trees to the people of Japan. The annual celebration honor the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan and the continued close relationship between the two countries.
Today, the nation’s greatest springtime celebration spans four weekends and welcomes more than 1.5 million people to enjoy diversity and the trees. The famous trees signal Washington’s beginning of spring with an explosion of life and color that surrounds the Tidal Basin with striking pale pink and white blossoms.
